Declutter and get organized -Part 2
CLOTHING
Step 1: Gather All Clothing
Collect all your clothing items from every corner of your house. This includes clothes from your closet, drawers, laundry room, and any other storage areas.
Step 2: Pile Them Up
Create a large pile of all your clothing on a clean, open space. This visual representation can help you realize the extent of your possessions.
Step 3: Touch Each Item
Pick up each item one by one and hold it in your hands. Kondo encourages you to physically touch and feel each item to determine whether it sparks joy.
Step 4: Ask Yourself "Does It Spark Joy?"
As you hold each item, ask yourself whether it brings you joy. If it does, keep it. If not, thank the item for its service and consider letting it go.
Step 5: Discard Unwanted Items
Create separate piles for items you want to keep and those you want to discard. For the items you're letting go, express gratitude and then decide whether to donate, sell, or dispose of them responsibly.
Step 6: Organize the Keepers
For the clothing you decide to keep, organize them neatly. Kondo has specific folding techniques to maximize space and visibility within drawers well i can't really comment about the specific folding technique as i haven't taken the course but yes can suggest you some organizing options.
Additional Tips:
· Consider Subcategories: If the clothing category is overwhelming, you can break it down into subcategories like tops, bottoms, dresses, etc., and follow the same process for each subcategory.
· Think About Seasons: If you're decluttering during a particular season, focus on items relevant to that season. Store off-season clothing separately.
· Storage Solutions: Invest in storage solutions that help maintain the organization. Kondo emphasizes simplicity and visibility.
By starting with clothing, you build momentum and develop the skills to make decisions about what items truly bring you joy. Once you've completed the clothing category, you can move on to the next category in the KonMari method, such as books, papers, and so on.
